Meet the Intern: Alex Freeman

Tuesday, April 08, 2025

Maria Rouzzo

My name is Alex Freeman and I’m a 3D artist and filmmaker from Cleveland. I grew up in Cleveland and spent time in high school volunteering with the Cleveland International Film Festival and ushering with Playhouse Square. Getting involved with theater early set me on my path towards all varieties of entertainment. In May 2024 I graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design with a BFA in Computer Animation and an animated short film under my belt. Throughout my first year post-graduation I’ve attended festivals for my film in Italy, interned with an animation studio in London, worked with a startup to develop a PC horror game, and now I’m returning to Cleveland to intern with the Film Commission.

Coming back home, I’m hoping to get more involved with the film industry in Cleveland. I was attracted to the Greater Cleveland Film Commission internship because I wanted to come back to my home roots. Taking a deeper look into this organization I found a plethora of resources to help young filmmakers trying to get their start. My goals for this internship are to learn more about film production outside of animation, network with local studios, and get more involved with film in Cleveland. While my expertise in animation gives me a specialized artist’s eye, I’m hoping to use my time post-graduation to reach out more into other mediums, get outside my comfort zone, and explore what I like while I’m still young. I hold interest with a wide variety of entertainment mediums, including puppetry, animation, gaming, live action film, and themed attractions. I believe this internship is the perfect way to dip my toes into a little bit of everything and really get a look at what happens behind the scenes.

Outside of my professional world, I like to explore other artistic outlets. Cooking from the heart is an art of its own. I love improvising new recipes and perfecting old ones, such as my famous risotto. I’m also an avid reader with a special interest for dystopian future novels, as well as a new spark in the romantasy genre. I like to take dance classes as well, dabbling in a bit of pole dancing and aerial hoop. Within the community, I enjoy getting involved teaching the next generation of elementary and teen artists through workshops and courses.

Some of my favorite TV shows include Crazy Ex-girlfriend, Parks and Recreation, and The Twilight Zone. Some of my favorite movies include Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Hairspray and The Hunger Games Films (as well as the books). Anything with horror or comedy is my wheelhouse. As of recently, I’ve been catching up on older shows like Game of Thrones and Lost.
