Ohio-based comedy from the Turner Brothers to debut at Sundance | FOX 8 News

(WDTN) — The phone rang in early December. On one end of the line was an official from the Sundance Film Festival.

On the other: tangible, giddy excitement.

“We were trying to play it cool, we were like ‘oh that’s awesome.’ But you know really … we muted the phone and I ran outside and was runnin’ around,” said Julien Turner during a Zoom call in late December. “I know Justen was running around the house.”

The two, four years apart in age, have filmed ad spots for Nike — featuring Akron’s own LeBron James — Cheez-Its and Taco Bell, to name only a few. They’ve already staked their claim on Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list and are the youngest filmmakers to be commissioned by Sesame Street.

So, you may be wondering: What’s left to do? Well, premiering a pilot at one of the biggest and most well-known film festivals in the country.

The show is titled “FreeLance,” and the two describe it as a comedy that is the “culmination of our experience as filmmakers”

“We had this kind of running joke that we would have, every shoot, where if something went wrong or we went through an experience that was — you know — maybe not funny at the time, but probably funny when we look back at it we would say, ‘Let’s put that in ‘FreeLance,”” Julien says. “‘FreeLance’ was this comedy show where — you know — all the bad things happen that all filmmakers kind of have to go through."
